Course: Biodiversity informatics and ecological niche modelling
The course covers an introduction to a new emerging discipline of biodiversity informatics and how large-scale biodiversity data can be used for ecological modelling to solve problems in climate change, biodiversity loss, invasive species, etc. The first part of the course covers what biodiversity data is available on the Internet, and how biodiversity data can be made interoperable and integrated from thousands of databases. The second part deals with using that data for modelling using some of the latest techniques. The attendees need to have basic knowledge of biodiversity issues, biological taxonomy, statistical modelling, GIS, and use of Internet. The course will be conducted in English.

Seminar: Lajihavainnot tietojärjestelmiin
Lajihavainnot tietojärjestelmiin -seminaarin tavoitteena on tuoda yhteen havaintotietojärjestelmien ylläpitäjiä, suunnittelijoita ja käyttäjiä yli eliöryhmärajojen. Tavoitteena on vaihtaa hyviä kokemuksia sekä tunnistaa mahdollisia yhteisiä kehittämisalueita. Seminaarin järjestää Turun yliopisto ja sitä tukee EU:n temaattinen verkosto European Network for Biodiversity Information (ENBI) ja EU Life -hanke Envifacilitate.

There are also interesting medieval historic monuments and sandstone caves, exellent recreation possibilities for the whole family. All Nordic and Baltic scientists and students, also our colleagues from other countries doing research in entomology are heartly welcomed to the Congress. Meeting: Open Forum for Metadata Registries
This is the sixth in a series of international conferences on this topic. Participants will explore the capabilities, uses, content, development, and operation of registries and related technologies. Emphasis is on managing the semantics (meaning) of data that is shared within and between organizations or disseminated via the World Wide Web. This Open Forum will concentrate on the following technologies: ISO/IEC 11179 Metadata Registries, Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI), XML Registries/Repositories, Database Catalogs (e.g., relational DBMS/SQL), CASE Tool Repositories, Software Component Registries, Ontological Registries, Dublin Core Registries. Tutorials will be given on these technologies and on the relevant standards. A theme will be cooperation and interoperation of these technologies.
