This server hosted an observation database for the members of the Lepidopterological Society of Finland in 2002-2005. After consolidation of database efforts by the Society, and installation of Matti Virtala's database at the Museum of Natural History, this database was closed for new observations in 2006.

All the 8360 observations that were reported here have now been copied to the Virtala database.

Also 3500 observations announced on Arto Avanto's home page www.saunalahti.fi/~avanto1/ in 2000-2001 have been copied to Virtala database. Observations between 1997-1999 are still waiting. Volunteers for data cleansing could contact hannu@bioshare.com.

Data quality had to be improved a lot, as these early databases allowed quite free input, whereas Virtala's database checks all important fields for correctness. About 10% of the records had to be corrected. Most common errors in data were miss-spelling of scientific name, and using a wrong coordinate system. Some of these were fixed automatically but also manual work was involved. If you find out that your records have been altered wrongly, contact hannu@bioshare.com for correction.

All these data can be searched also through GBIF's global services, see www.gbif.net.
